A healthy critical and writing culture supports a robust industry by creating new perspectives and context for Australian music. However, access to critical review is on the wane, with fewer outlets offering space for substantial music coverage resulting in a decrease in visibility for Australian new artists.
The Music Writer’s Lab is an initiative to amplify the development of a new generation of music critics. It seeks to facilitate critical discussion of music culture, and explore new distribution partnerships. It also exists to celebrate established critics and create a deep appreciation for Australian writing and music.
The program is designed to support and develop the critical perspectives of people of marginalised voices, including women, non-binary people, and all gender identities from across Australia.
